What is a Choke?
- A choke is a device that filters network traffic, only allowing certain packets through (called packet filtering). Usually, this is a performed by a router.
What is a Gate A gate is a special computer that acts as a server and must have access to the public network. Why use routers? Routers have operating systems that are designed for high speed. The operating systems in routers don't have the vulnerabilities of a general purpose operating system like Unix. Routers can be programmed at lower levels than general purpose operating systems like Unix. How does this affect Linux?
- For most users, there is no practical use. Routers and the associated extra NICs are prohibitively expensive.
- In a business environment where a connection between the local network and the Internet is required and where the data must be protected, using a combinatin of routers and Linux-based Gates is practical.
