- 1984 -- Stallman starts GNU and the FSF.
- Apr 1991 -- Linus (a Finnish student) posts about a 'project' he's working on:
- just a hobby, won't be big and professional.... free of any minix code, ... it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable...and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks.
- Oct 1991 -- Linux Ver 0.02 Released
- Dec 1993 -- 100,000 estimated users
- Mar 1994 -- Linux 1.0 Released (500,000)
- June 1996 -- Linux 2.0 Released (3,500,000)
- Mar 1998 -- 7,500,000 estimated users
- Jan 2000 -- ????
