The PANIC Button

In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has already supplanted the great Encyclopedia Galactica as the standard repository for all knowledge and wisdom, for though it as many omission and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects.

First, it is slightly cheaper; and second, it has the words DON'T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.

Abort Command

If an emacs command is taking a long time to process and you wish to abort it, you can use a C-G. You can also use C-G to cancel any partial keystrokes (e.g. you type C-X when you meant to type C-C).
    C-G Abort emacs command.

Undo Command

Another great command is the undo command. Emacs has an unlimited undo stack. A single Undo command will remove the effect of the latest change to the file. Multiple undos will remove earlier changes. You can undo a file all way back to the beginning of its edit session.
    C-X u Undo file changes.
C-_ Same as C-X u, except easier to type.
